What Is Jujutsu Kaisen Manga About?
The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high school student with incredible physical strength who lives an ordinary life. Everything changes when his friends accidentally open a cursed object containing a finger of Ryomen Sukuna, the most powerful and feared curse in history.
When dangerous cursed spirits attack his school, Yuji makes a life-changing decision. To save his friends and gain the power needed to fight these spirits, he swallows Sukuna’s finger. This act makes him the vessel for the King of Curses, essentially turning him into a walking threat to humanity.
Instead of being executed immediately, Yuji catches the attention of Satoru Gojo, one of the strongest jujutsu sorcerers alive. Gojo enrolls him at Tokyo Jujutsu High, where Yuji trains alongside Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki. His mission is simple but dangerous: find and consume all of Sukuna’s remaining fingers scattered across Japan, then be executed to remove the curse from existence forever.
The series explores a hidden world where jujutsu sorcerers fight cursed spirits born from negative human emotions. These spirits feed on unsuspecting humans, creating constant danger. The sorcerers work in secret to protect humanity from threats most people never know exist.
What makes this story unique is its willingness to embrace darkness and consequences. Characters die, plans fail, and victories often come with heavy losses. The line between good and evil blurs as the story progresses, showing that even curses are born from human behavior and emotion.

Major Arcs Explained
Perfect Preparation Arc
This arc serves as a bridge between the chaos of the Shibuya Incident and the deadly Culling Game. After Gojo’s sealing and the collapse of jujutsu authority, the remaining sorcerers must regroup and prepare for what comes next.
The arc focuses on planning, forming alliances, and dealing with the aftermath of previous battles. Megumi Fushiguro becomes determined to save his sister Tsumiki, who has been marked as a target for the Culling Game. Yuji, still traumatized by the damage Sukuna caused in Shibuya, struggles with guilt and questions his purpose.
The team decides to contact Master Tengen, an ancient and powerful being, to learn more about the Culling Game and how to free Gojo from the Prison Realm. With help from Yuta Okkotsu and Choso, they sneak into Tokyo Jujutsu High and reach Tengen’s hidden location.
A major turning point occurs with Maki Zenin. After being tortured by her own clan along with her twin sister Mai, tragedy strikes when Mai dies at their father’s hands. This sacrifice awakens Maki’s complete Heavenly Restriction, giving her superhuman abilities like Toji Fushiguro once had. Fueled by rage and grief, Maki destroys the entire Zenin clan, fundamentally changing the power structure of the jujutsu world.
This arc also shows the execution of Masamichi Yaga, the former principal, ordered by the jujutsu higher-ups as punishment for his role in creating independent cursed corpses. These events demonstrate how the old system is crumbling, making way for a new and uncertain future.
Itadori’s Extermination Arc
Following the Shibuya Incident, the jujutsu world has changed completely. Gojo is sealed, cursed spirits are now public knowledge, and the higher-ups want Yuji dead for harboring Sukuna.
The elders assign Yuta Okkotsu, a powerful special-grade sorcerer who recently returned to Japan, to execute Yuji. This creates tension as Yuta was one of Gojo’s students and now seems to be following orders to kill his junior.
However, everything is not as it appears. Yuta has no real intention of killing Yuji. Before Gojo was sealed, he asked Yuta to protect Yuji and his underclassmen if anything happened to him. When Yuta finally confronts Yuji, he stages a convincing performance for the higher-ups, making it look like he’s carrying out the execution while actually sparing Yuji’s life.
Meanwhile, Megumi learns that according to his father Toji’s agreement with Gojo, he becomes the head of the Zenin clan if Gojo cannot look after him. With Gojo sealed, this condition activates, thrusting Megumi into leadership of one of the most powerful jujutsu families.
Choso, who previously fought against the heroes, now recognizes Yuji as his “brother” due to their shared connection through cursed wombs. He switches sides and begins helping Yuji, creating an unlikely alliance.
The Itadori’s Extermination Arc ends with Megumi finding Yuji and begging him to help save his sister Tsumiki from the Culling Game. Yuji, despite his guilt and self-doubt, agrees on one condition: if Sukuna takes control again, Yuta must kill him without hesitation.
Culling Game Arc
This is the longest arc in the series, spanning 63 chapters. After the Shibuya Incident, Kenjaku activates his master plan: the Culling Game, a deadly battle royale designed to generate massive amounts of cursed energy.
The game involves ten colonies spread across Japan. Players include newly awakened sorcerers from Kenjaku’s manipulation, ancient sorcerers reincarnated from the past, and anyone who enters a colony barrier. The rules are strict and enforced by binding vows. Players must declare participation within 19 days of awakening or have their cursed techniques removed, which effectively means death.
Yuji and Megumi enter the Tokyo No. 1 Colony to find Hiromi Higuruma, a lawyer who awakened cursed techniques during a moment of rage. After intense confrontation, Yuji convinces Higuruma to add a new rule allowing players to transfer points between each other. This is crucial to their plan to eventually create a rule that lets players exit the game.
Meanwhile, other teams tackle different colonies. Hakari and Panda head to Tokyo No. 2 Colony to find Hajime Kashimo and the Angel. Yuta enters the Sendai Colony, one of the most dangerous areas filled with powerful ancient sorcerers.
Throughout the arc, heroes face numerous reincarnated sorcerers with unique and deadly cursed techniques. Battles become increasingly complex as characters must understand their opponents’ abilities while protecting themselves and completing their objectives.
The ultimate goals are clear: rescue Tsumiki, free Gojo from the Prison Realm, prevent Kenjaku from taking control of Master Tengen, and survive the game. However, the arc takes a devastating turn when Tsumiki is revealed to be possessed by Yorozu, an ancient sorcerer.
In a shocking moment, Sukuna manages to take control and feeds Megumi one of his own fingers transformed with his essence, making Megumi his new host. This betrayal crushes the heroes’ plans and sets up the final conflicts of the series.
Why You Should Read the Manga
The Complete Story Is Available
The biggest advantage of reading the manga is having access to the entire story. With all 271 chapters published, you can experience Yuji’s complete journey from beginning to end without waiting for anime seasons. You’ll see how every plot thread resolves and understand the full scope of Gege Akutami’s vision.
Stunning Original Artwork
While the anime is beautifully animated, the manga showcases Gege Akutami’s raw artistic talent. The detailed character designs, creative panel layouts, and intense action sequences deserve appreciation in their original form. The art style blends horror elements with dynamic action, creating a visual experience that stands on its own.
Deeper Character Development
The manga has more space to explore character backstories, motivations, and internal thoughts. You get a clearer understanding of why characters make certain decisions and how their past shapes their present. The pacing allows for subtle character moments that sometimes get compressed in anime adaptations.
Complex Power System Explained
The series features one of the most intricate power systems in modern manga. Cursed energy, cursed techniques, domain expansions, and binding vows all have specific rules and mechanics. The manga takes time to explain these concepts in detail, helping readers fully appreciate the strategic depth of battles.
Foreshadowing and Hidden Details
Gege Akutami plants clues and hints throughout the story that become clear upon rereading. Small marks, brief dialogue lines, and background details often foreshadow major plot developments. The manga format allows you to study panels at your own pace and catch these subtle elements.
Ahead of the Anime
Reading the manga puts you ahead of the anime release schedule. You can avoid spoilers and engage with the active fan community discussing the latest developments. This is especially valuable given how difficult it is to avoid spoilers in the current anime community.
The Authentic Experience
The anime makes some structural changes and starts from the second chapter rather than the first. Reading the manga gives you the story exactly as Akutami intended, without any adaptation changes. You experience the narrative in its purest form.
Horror Elements Shine
The series blends action with genuine horror, featuring grotesque cursed spirits and disturbing situations. The manga’s black and white artwork emphasizes these horror elements effectively, creating an atmosphere that feels both terrifying and captivating.
Manga and Anime Comparison
Visual Presentation
The anime features spectacular animation from Studio MAPPA with vibrant colors, fluid motion, and breathtaking fight choreography. Battles that might take a few pages in the manga become extended sequences with added details and cinematography. Character designs get refined and polished for animation.
The manga, however, has its own visual strengths. Akutami’s art style uses rough, sketchy linework that captures raw emotion and intensity. The black and white format enhances the horror atmosphere. Panel composition and page layouts create a sense of movement and impact that’s unique to the manga medium.
Pacing Differences
The anime adjusts pacing for episodic structure. Some scenes expand with additional dialogue or action, while others compress to fit time constraints. Fight sequences typically get extended in the anime with more choreography and visual flair.
The manga maintains a faster, more consistent pace. Readers control how quickly they move through the story, allowing them to slow down for complex explanations or speed through familiar territory.
Character Development
The manga provides more internal monologue and character thoughts, giving deeper insight into motivations and feelings. Secondary characters receive more development through additional scenes and backstory.
The anime uses voice acting, music, and animation to convey emotion in different ways. Facial expressions come alive through motion, and voice performances add layers to character personalities. The anime also includes “Juju Sanpo” shorts that show characters in daily life situations not in the manga.
Story Changes
The anime starts from the second manga chapter instead of the first, creating an in media res opening that hooks viewers immediately. Episode 1 gives more weight to Yuji’s grandfather’s death, making it a more emotional and significant event.
Some minor scenes get added for better character building or comedy. References to other anime appear in the adaptation. Fight scenes receive extensions with more detailed choreography.
Atmosphere and Tone
The anime enhances emotional moments through music composition, voice acting, and timing. Tragic scenes hit harder with carefully chosen soundtracks and deliberate pacing. Small details get added, like Gojo’s sore eyes suggesting he was crying when remembering his past.
The manga creates atmosphere through stark contrasts, detailed curse designs, and creative page layouts. The horror elements feel more visceral in black and white artwork.
Best Choice for You
If you prefer visual spectacle, fluid animation, and voice acting, the anime excels in these areas. It makes complex battles easier to follow through motion and color.
If you want the complete story now, deeper character insight, and the authentic creator’s vision, the manga is the better choice. It also allows you to appreciate Akutami’s artistic skill and catch foreshadowing details at your own pace.
Many fans enjoy both, starting with the anime for its stunning presentation and then reading the manga to get the full story and catch details they missed. Either way, Jujutsu Kaisen delivers a compelling dark fantasy experience that has earned its place among the best modern manga series.
